Computational Ecology, Ecoinformatics, and Open Science

About Me

I am a newly fledged Ph.D. out of the Weecology lab group.  I'm currently figuring out how to be a working computational ecologist with a chronic illness.

When not doing science, I'm taking care of two Nubian dairy goats, a small flock of Cochin chickens, and a hive of bees, assisted by my brilliant dog, who keeps an eye on me and makes sure I behave.

I am a chronically ill computational ecologist, currently without any institutional affiliation, although I'm working on it.  I have adapted to my physical restrictions by leveraging my computational ecologist skills to substitute a virtual presence for my physical presence.  My general research interests are community ecology, macroecology, ecoinformatics, computational ecology and open access.

Macroecologists typically use long-term or large scale ecological data sets to identify general temporal and spatial patterns to identify pattern-generating processes.   I prefer to work at regional or continental scales, and tend to use large, publicly available datasets for a variety of taxa. I am interested in using a computational approach to understand of the commonness and rarity of species across space and time.

I'm also active in trying to work to make science more inclusive, and have written several guest blog posts addressing the problems and some solutions that I have found as a chronically ill ecologist.

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
